Say Hello To Zippy

Species:ย Bottlenose Dolphin

Gender: Male

Name: Zippy

Size: Approximately 2.8 metres long

Bottlenose Dolphins are fascinating creatures! Here are some cool facts about them:

  1. ๐Ÿง  Brainy Creatures: Bottlenose dolphins are among the smartest animals on Earth! They can solve problems, use tools (like sponges to protect their snouts while foraging), and even recognise themselves in mirrors.

  2. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Chatty Swimmers: They communicate through a complex system of clicks, whistles, and body language. Each dolphin has a unique signature whistle that acts like a name!

  3. ๐ŸŠ Fast and Agile: Bottlenose dolphins can swim at speeds of up to 35 km/h (22 mph) and perform impressive leaps up to 5 meters (16 feet) out of the water.

  4. ๐Ÿงญ Echolocation Experts: They use echolocation to find food and navigate murky waters, emitting clicks and listening for the echoes to locate objects.

  5. ๐Ÿฅฉ Clever Hunters: Dolphins use teamwork to herd fish into tight groups or even use their tails to stun fish with quick slaps of water.

  6. ๐Ÿ‘ถ Long Childhoods: Calves stay with their mothers for up to 6 years, learning essential survival and social skills.

  7. ๐Ÿ’จ Breath-Holding Pros: While they breathe air through their blowholes, bottlenose dolphins can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes!

  8. ๐ŸŒ Worldwide Residents: These adaptable dolphins are found in warm and temperate seas worldwide, often near coastlines.

  9. ๐Ÿ˜„ Playful Personalities: Known for their curiosity and playfulness, they often surf waves, play with seaweed, or interact with boats and humans.

  10. โค๏ธ Strong Social Bonds: Bottlenose dolphins live in groups called pods, which can range from a few individuals to over 100, and they form lifelong friendships.

What is Wave by Architect?

Wave is a range of products by The Architect Watch Company. A Wave bracelet contains technology that tracks real sea life animals in the ocean where the more often you track your dolphin, the more plastic we remove from the ocean.

How is my dolphin tracked?

The technology used is called SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature). These tags are a specialised type of tracking device used in wildlife research, particularly for marine animals like dolphins, bears, whales, turtles, and sharks.

These tags provide invaluable data on the animals' movements, behaviour, and environmental conditions, contributing to conservation efforts and a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems.

SPOT tags are a non-invasive tag which allows scientists to gather critical data without disturbing or harming the dolphin.

Why is the tracking updated every few days?

SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature) tags update data only every few days due to a combination of technical, environmental, and biological factors. Hereโ€™s why:

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ 1. Satellite Availability:

Satellites pass over certain areas at specific times.

If the animal is underwater (for marine species) or in an area with obstructed satellite signals (like dense forests for terrestrial animals), the tag cannot transmit data until conditions improve.

๐Ÿ”‹ 2. Battery Conservation:

Frequent transmissions drain battery life faster.

To extend the tagโ€™s lifespan (often months to over a year), transmissions are programmed to occur less frequently (e.g., every few days instead of continuously).

๐Ÿข 3. Animal Behavior and Environment:

Marine animals (like sharks or turtles) must surface for the tag to send data.

If the animal spends long periods underwater or in areas with rough seas, data transmission opportunities decrease.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 4. Data Management and Cost Efficiency:

Transmitting data via satellite incurs costs.

Researchers may program tags to send data less frequently to balance cost, data quality, and longevity.

๐Ÿ“ก 5. Data Prioritisation:

Some tags are set to store data and transmit it when conditions are optimal.

Prioritising high-quality location fixes over frequent but less accurate ones improves research outcomes.

Tell me about the Clean Wave Initiative

Every time you tap your Wave bracelet to your phone to track your dolphin, we make a donation to our selected ocean plastic removal partner.

How is this possible? You will notice on the page below there is a message from our sponsor. We give 100% of advertising proceeds to removing plastic from oceans.

The more you track your dolphin, the more plastic is removed from the ocean!

Why is there an advertisement showing below?

Wave was created to help marine sea life. Over 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the ocean each year, thatโ€™s equivalent to a garbage truck full of plastic every minute!

We are combating this by removing as much plastic from the ocean as possible.

Every time you track your dolphin and view the below advertisement, we donate 100% of the advertising proceeds to removing plastic from the ocean. A modern solution to a real-world problem.
